If you intentionally starve yourself and demand that you keep losing weight, no matter how low you get, you are experiencing a serious eating disorder. It’s called anorexia nervosa. You think you are becomming thin but others think you look like a starvation poster for emaciated people in third world countries. You are not alone. Millions of people in the US suffers from this problem and most are adolescent girls and young women. If you are one of them, you are opening yourself up to the potential of many medical problems including starvation and heart attack and may produce the intention of suicide and follow through with the deed itself.
Here’s the way it goes. You feel you have a problem with extra pounds and want to get them off and reach an ‘ideal’ weight. So you stop eating. You won’t eat. You look in the mirror and think’ I’m still fat, how can that be?’ So you keep on ‘going hungry’ , even when you look thin. The terror is that if you start eating again, you will go right back to being chubby, inferior, and unacceptable, and disliked.
You are obsessed. You are a ‘foodomaniac’. Every tiny morsel must be seen as the enemy. You find ways to avoid being in a social situation where food is required. If you find yourself trapped in an ‘eating’ situation you take small portions, push them around on the plate, and pray for a dog to stray by your seat who will gladly take up the slack.
Pay Attention! The risk of suicide among your group is incredibly higher than that of healthy, normal weight women. You are slowly killing yourself and you have to wonder what is going on in your mind. You are feeling desperate and secretly suspect that if you are not thin as a rail you will be ugly, unattractive, unpopular, and unable to socialize. So you keep starving yourself, killing yourself slowly, experiencing death by a thousand cuts called food deprivation. Perhaps you are not using a gun, taking a huge quantity of pills, or driving into an embankment at 90 miles per hour. But you are harming yourself and you might well put yourself in the grave.
What are the symptoms you could have which make you ’suicidal by starvation’? Listen up. If you have many or all of these symptoms you need to get help today. It could save your life.
1. You keep getting thinner and thinner. Your clothes hang on you. Your bones show.
2. Even though you see a skeleton in the mirror, you still see a fat person staring back at you.
3. You have become the calorie expert and watch carbs like a hawk.
4. You keep telling yourself and others that you are not hungry and don’t want to eat.
5. You work out and exercise strenuously, trimming off the fats only you see.
6. If you eat anything you feel nauseated or bloated.
7. The scale is your best friend and you visit frequently.
8. When showering you notice hair is falling out.
9. You feel cold and like to have a cover of some kind around.
10. Suddenly you stop menstruating.
Here’s your personality profile. You are a ‘good girl’ who goes along with others and keep your feelings and opinions to yourself. You tend to be a perfectionist and like to have control, especially over your eating. People think they know you but you are secretive and can be manipulative. You aren’t talking about weight, food, and dieting, but it is foremost on your mind.
Send me an e mail if you think you are suffering from this disorder and what you are willing to do to overcome it. Remember, you are loved and cared for and are a child of God for who you are, not for how you turn yourself into a bony skeleton.
