What Made Me So Worried and Anxious?

There are so many causes of anxiety that even though we talk about some of them, don’t you ever believe for a moment that you can exactly pinpoint why you are overcome with so much worry. It helps to understand a little about the causes but we will get to the point where we will be talking about what you are actually going to about it. But I digress so let’s move on.

I’m Not Good Looking , Not Good Enough, Too Fat, Too Thin, Too short, too quiet, etc.

We all put too much emphasis on appearance but that’s the way our society is today. Television really causes much of this trouble because everyone is made up to look like they have no flaws. You tend to compare yourself with these people you see and fall short. That causes no end of worry that you are looking inferior and not good enough.  Over and over again, people have told me that if they do not think they look good, they have no confidence.  If they feel they have a fatal flaw, they perceive others are focused on it and it is a lose lose situation.

I Was Scared Early On

Let’s face it, there are those of you who are exposed to situations and people early on that cause you to be more stressed than someone else who didn’t have that experience. Then later on in life when you are faced with even a reminder of that situation or that person or that thing, you again become tense and anxious.  Some people seem to live charmed lives, grow up in happy families, get all the love and support they need, and do not seem to constantly encounter obstacles and bad experiences.  The rest of us have to make do with what we had and grow and learn how to make ourselves better, happier people.  My sister-in-law’s favorite saying is ‘all families are dysfunctional’.  Maybe so, but I know for sure that some are more dysfunctional than others.

My Parents Made Me Do It

Anxiety and fears tend to run in families and one of your parents was probably a worry wart just like you. Many times when I was seeing a young adult with anxiety problems I would ask an older family member with similar problems to come in and describe the worry he or she had and how he or she had learned to deal with it.  It is really something to have two people sitting in your office, chattering away about their worries, fears, and anxieties, kind of playing off one another. I also notice it makes each of them feel more comfortable and more at ease describing to each other how awful they feel when this happens.  The parent who is a worrier dreads having their children experience the same torture.  As a matter of fact, this is a reason many people come for therapy.  They want to take preventive measure to help their kids.

Jobs And Finances: Can I Make A Living, Hang On To Money, And Survive to Retirement?

Job worries are all around us and it is just a reality that we have to keep an eye out at all times for fluctuations in the economy which could make our jobs obsolete. You are concerned about the money you have or don’t have in the bank, whether you can afford to have kids and raise them, whether you afford a nice house or new car. You juggle figures in your mind and want to make sure you don’t end up out on the street with no where to go. Sometimes you are so worried about any change that you don’t want to change jobs even though you know it would be a good thing. You worry about job transfers and how they will affect you and the family. You worry about your wife or husband’s job. You worry about having health insurance through your employment. If this area of your life is pressing on your mind, you will be stirred up a lot because there’s a lot of ifs and buts about anything to do with getting and keeping financial security.  You and your family’s security and safety can hinge on your decisions.

I’m Sick And Nobody Seems To Know What’s Wrong With Me

You may well find yourself worried about your health and others may tell you that you are a hypochondriac. You hear about an illness and soon you start to think you have it. Someone in your family contacts a disease and you look for signs that you have it. Whenever some little physical problem comes up with you or someone in your family, you think the worst and start to panic.  The truth is when you have an illness which your doctors cannot seem to diagnose, like Chronic Fatigue, Lupus, Irritable Bowel, Stomach ache, Headache you begin to feel frightened.  After all if the doctor cannot understand what is going on with you, how can you be expected to deal with what is wrong?

So many things can trigger worry problems and everyone is affected differently by life situations.  Anyone who tries to tell you that one size fits all when it comes to Worry World is out of line.  You are an individual and need individual suggestions on how to overcome your worry and stress.
